Dharma
Teachers of the Golden Wind Order
(Dharma Holder):
After
many years of practicing as an active Dharma Priest, when the
Zen Center’s guiding teacher feels that an adnvanced student has
the ability and the right commitment to assist other Sangha members
with their own Zen practice, they are asked to assume the role
of Dharma Teacher at a special ceremony. This ceremony publicly
marked their entry into the teacher program.
This
position is obviously not one that can be applied for; it is an
appointment at the sole discretion of the Guiding Teacher and
is a significant step in the path of the Golden Wind Order student.
Dharma Teachers are senior practitioners who take on greater responsibility
in order to help newer students better understand Zen practice.
Dharma Teachers are authorized to conduct consulting interviews
that focus on practice, forms, and education thereby assisting
in the teaching of the more junior students in the Sangha. During
retreats, senior dharma teachers may provide support to students
who need it. Dharma Teachers should also lead short retreats and
examine the realm of teaching within the confines of their own
insight and ability. The responsibilities taken on by Dharma Teachers
are helpful in intensifying their own practice. Learning how to
digest our practice and use it to help other people becomes an
active sharing and learning experience. You must have the appointment
of your guiding teacher, who may require you to make additional
effort to support a positive experience while taking this step.
Senior dharma teachers are given a small green kasa and a special
green ceremonial kasa, which is worn at ceremonies and public
events.
